Lecture at 10 am, book signing at 11 am
Green Gulch Farm, 1601 Shoreline Highway, Muir Beach, CA 94965 [directions]
Grace Schireson will be presenting the public talk at Green Gulch Farm on Sunday, December 27 at 10 am, followed by a book signing for Zen Women: Beyond Tea-Ladies, Iron Maidens, and Macho Masters, published this year by Wisdom Publications.
“Grace’s readings of the stories and teachings of Zen’s women ancestors are of far more than mere historical interest: they are of great value to all of us practicing Buddhism today. You cannot find a more useful or more inspiring book on this subject.”—From the foreword by Miriam Levering, author of Rethinking Scripture
This landmark presentation at last makes heard the centuries of voices of Zen’s women. Through exploring the teachings and history of Zen’s female ancestors, from the time of the Buddha to ancient and modern female masters in China, Korea, and Japan, Grace Schireson offers us a view of a more balanced Dharma practice. The lessons of Zen’s women are especially applicable to our complex lives, embedded as they are in webs of family relations and responsibilities, and the challenges of love and work. …
The classic literature of “Patriarchs’ Zen” often portrays women only as “tea-ladies,” bit players in the drama of male students’ enlightenments; as “iron maidens,” tough-as-nails women always jousting with men; or as women who themselves become “macho masters,” teaching the same Patriarchs’ Zen as the men. Schireson explores how our female Zen masters actually lived, practiced, and taught uniquely as women. She also looks at how it affected these women to be taught by men, how their Zen training helped them with their emotional lives and family relationships, and how they uniquely expressed the Dharma. Zen Women lets us all benefit from the wisdom of our Dharma grandmothers.
