2007 Tour of Japan
The Many Faces of Japanese Buddhism
October 18-November 3, 2007

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This two week trip to Japan included four main themes

  • Visiting and practicing in several beautiful Zen temples, including Eihei-ji Monastery, Tofuku-ji Monastery, and Rinso-in Temple (Suzuki-Roshi’s home temple)

  • Learning about the many faces of Japanese Buddhism, including Shingon, Tendai, and Shin Buddhism, as well as staying in a Shingon Temple on Mt. Koya (pictured above), one of Japan's holiest and most beautiful sites

  • Cultural and sightseeing activities, including things like the Incense Game, Kyoto’s Kitchen Street, Mt. Hiei, and Kyoto’s Temple Street

  • Day trips to sites of cultural interest like Nara, plus unstructured time for relaxation and shopping

 

The expected costs of the 16-day tour break out as follows, on a per person basis:

$2,650.00 for all 15 days’ accommodations, including 8 nights in Kyoto, food and 7 nights lodging in temples, and 2-week Japan Rail passes, which will cover all surface travel by train while in Japan, including bullet train.  A $1,500.00 advance deposit will be required by May 15, 2007 to hold a place on the tour.

$450.00 estimated allowance for the remaining days, to include non-temple meals, bus fare, subways and taxis, and to be the responsibility of the individual traveler

$800.00—$1,000.00 estimated airfare costs.  We will be making a group air travel purchase
